Two sculptural villas in a Mediterranean forest

Also avaialble for: Travellers

Description

On a plain where almond and olive trees grow sit two villas designed for Dutch sculptor Xander Spronken by Valencian architecture studio Sanahuja & Partners. Surrounded by a mountain environment in the interior of Castellón, they delight us with exuberant views of the Peñagolosa Natural Park (1,800 m), the highest mountain in the province and of incredible beauty.

Conceived as a place of retreat, the uniqueness of the location is no coincidence, just half an hour’s drive from the coast. Spronken House consists of two villas, one designed as the artist’s main home and the other as a guest pavilion. Spacious spaces in which to create, be inspired, work or simply indulge in a life of contemplation. Each module constitutes a dwelling in itself but can also function together. Both have an open-plan layout, large openings to the outside and great spatiality, thanks to the six-metre-high concrete pillars that make it possible to divide them into a ground floor and a mezzanine.

Concrete pillars, wooden beams from the piles of the port of Rotterdam and iron and glass joinery give character to the construction, which multiplies its beauty at sunset when the play of light and shadow orchestrates its magic.

Facing southeast with Peñagolosa as the protagonist of the views.

Villa 1 is spread over 160 m2, sleeps 4 people (maximum 6) and has two bathrooms and a swimming pool. Outside, there is a wood-burning oven for outdoor cooking.

Villa 2 is south-west facing and has 150 m2 and can accommodate 4 people (maximum 6), two bathrooms and a swimming pool.

The property, created as a single-family home for the sculptor Xander Spronken (Maastricht, The Netherlands, 1956), extends over six hectares and consists of these two separate houses, each with its own swimming pool. They are equipped with air conditioning, underfloor heating, large fully equipped kitchens, open-plan living areas and two bedrooms and two bathrooms per villa. The houses are solar powered and heated by a heat pump.

Spronken House offers a private chef service and concierge services. In addition, there is easy access to popular markets, supermarkets, bakeries and butchers.

Located in the Alcalatén region (Castellón), it is close to natural enclaves such as the Regená beach, the Chorro del Villar and the Montanejos hot springs. In nearby towns you can go sailing, windsurfing, horse riding or visit charming villages such as Les Useres or Vilafamés, the Flors winery, the historic castle of Peñíscola or climb the Penyagolosa.

The proximity of the Mediterranean Sea allows you to enjoy a unique microclimate which, in winter, maintains a temperature of 20ºC, an ideal temperature for discovering its trails or cycling along them.
