Minimalist house for meditation in Alentejo
Description
Located in the heart of the Serra de Grândola, three minutes from the small town of Melides, this minimalist, cubic-shaped house reproduces in its sandstone-clad façade the vernacular constructions of this area of the Alentejo, surrounded by fields of cork oak trees, rice fields and vineyards. It is named Phüntsog Gatshäl, a Tibetan expression referring to the park of happiness and perfection, after the Lama Lodrö Tulku Rinpoche who blessed it.
The house is a project by the Lisbon architect Pedro Reis and its interiors reflect light through windows strategically placed to preserve the interior from the summer heat. It has a floor area of 120 m2, ceilings up to six metres high, can accommodate two people and has a kitchen, living room with overhead lighting, fireplace, dining room with circular table, bedroom and bathroom. It works with solar energy and a hot air pump. It has an 18-metre saltwater swimming pool reminiscent of the old swimming pools and connects to the outdoor dining room.
A further outbuilding has been built on the grounds which is dedicated to the sunset and designed for evening meditations, yoga sessions or enjoying a refreshing drink.
The garden, designed by Sara Távora, is ecologically sustainable and extends over 12 hectares with cork oak and pine trees.
Among the services, the property has: towels and sheets, kitchen and swimming pool, dining table, toilet paper and soap, wireless internet, free parking on the premises. Terrace, kitchen utensils, coffee maker, kettle, oven, underfloor heating and dishwasher. Smoking and pets are not allowed.
The house is accessible via a dirt road accessible to all types of vehicles.
The village of Melides is a 5 minute drive away where you can have a coffee with the locals in one of the typical Portuguese cafés.
It is a 10 minute drive to Melides beach, Carvalhal is 20 minutes away, and Lisbon 1h15.
