Ramales de la Victoria is a municipality located in the interior of the autonomous community of Cantabria. It borders Rasines to the north, Ruesga to the west, Soba to the south and the province of Vizcaya to the east. It forms part of the Asón-Agüera region, an old key communication route connecting the port of Laredo with the plateau, today via the N-629. The distance from Santander is 61 km (approximately 45 minutes by car), while from Madrid it is about 369 km, a journey time of just under 3 hours and 45 minutes by road. The orography of the municipality is rugged, with limestone rock formations. Ramales de la Victoria lies in a valley formed by the confluence of the rivers Asón and Gándara, surrounded by high peaks. Among the most outstanding mountains are Pico San Vicente (910 m), Picón del Carlista (737 m), El Moro and Peña del Mazo, all with impressive views. The river Asón, the main river in the area, flows through the municipality and joins its tributaries, the Gándara and the Carranza, before flowing into the Asón estuary, between the municipalities of Limpias, Santoña and Laredo. This region also witnessed the historic battle of Ramales during the First Carlist War, which consolidated the victory of the liberals led by Baldomero Espartero.
