Rural house in a former sultana dryer in the Marina Alta region

Also avaialble for: Travellers

Description

An old riurau, a rural construction typical of the Marina Alta region of Alicante, renovated and converted into a rural house at the end of the 1990s to adapt to the needs of the guests. The function of the riurau, related to the production of sultanas in this area, was to protect these fruits from the inclemency of the weather. These buildings, which since the end of the 18th century have marked the landscapes of the rural Marina Alta, are emblematic and unique in the world.

This is one of the few surviving riuraus in the region and has undergone renovation and interior refurbishment according to a project by the architect Marta Woodward, who has maintained the appearance of the traditional architecture of the area with its characteristic arcades. The refurbishment preserves the origins of this type of construction and, at the same time, offers maximum comfort, so that each room has its own bathroom and the common area is designed to be converted into a bedroom, depending on the needs of the guests.

Layout

The house is distributed on one floor and consists of a spacious living room, three bedrooms and four bathrooms, kitchen-dining room that connects to the garden. Two of the bedrooms are doubles with individual bathrooms and the third is a room with four single beds and its own bathroom.

The living room has a fireplace, perfect to warm up the winter days, and has sofa-beds that turn this room into an extra bedroom. It also has its own bathroom with shower so that the total capacity is up to 8 guests. The spacious kitchen-dining room is a unique place to share special moments.

All the details of the decoration have been taken care of with great attention to detail.

The original arcades of the riurau have been converted into glass windows that enhance the entry of natural light and allow the surrounding landscape to be integrated into the interior.

The furniture, linen and cotton fabrics, wall lamps with clay tiles, ceramic lamps and some pieces from auction houses give a touch of personality to the spaces with traditional clay floors and exposed beams painted in white.

Outside, the cottage enjoys a bright patio shaded by a vine and wicker furniture and a large garden with a private swimming pool fully fenced and with sun loungers for sunbathing.

The house is also available for events. The ceramic pieces, handmade by the owner, are for sale.
