Contemporary refuge in the Portuguese hinterland
Description
Simple yet sophisticated, this house follows the concept of the phrase “here in the mountains” because it is a work of architectural art embedded in its surroundings like a cork oak in the Alentejo landscape. Its construction alludes to the idea of belonging and its forms inspired by architectural movements such as Brutalism, Minimalism, Case Study and Modernism are surprising and invite you to discover them at your leisure.
This newly built house stands on a steep, wooded hill on the outskirts of Melides and is a project signed by architect Luis Pereira Miguel that pays homage to the traditional houses of the area. Built of earth, plaster, wood and concrete, it consists of three independent structures grouped around a central building which houses the guesthouse and a garage with a roof terrace.
It is built around an open inner courtyard, sheltered and enclosed by three large barn-style sliding doors, which is located where the original structure of the property once stood. Wooden furniture, with organic lines, composes the interior design of the bedrooms in a desert-inspired style. The large dining table and the bench are integrated into the open-plan living-dining room and the textiles of the house, made of natural fabrics, are in relaxing tones with the intention of being a continuity with the tones of the landscape that can be seen through the large windows and doors.
Situated between the Serra de Grândola and the beauty of the Atlantic Ocean, the sharp edges and corners of the exterior offer from the inside a perfect view of the surrounding nature. Inside, every piece of furniture, fabric or material used is well thought out and integrates or surprises.
The house is located at the highest point of the property. At the bottom of the property is the infinity pool whose waterfall blends into the landscape.
The house’s courtyard protects it from the afternoon winds of the Alentejo and stands on the site of the old house on the plot, so that the new house is built around it, as a tribute to the past.
The sharp curves of the house create a dance of shadows and light from dawn to dusk.
With an area of 250 m2, it can accommodate up to eight guests and has four bedrooms and two bathrooms.
The villa consists of three separate volumes. The first of these is the garage which has a roof terrace. Next, there is the guest nucleus with two large bedrooms and a bathroom with shower connecting the two rooms. Then there is the nuclear construction with the master bedroom and a large guest room known as the mediaroom, where a wall-to-wall sofa bed creates a space to share with the whole family to watch a film projected on the wall. It has all the high quality equipment for streaming connections.
The main volume has a spacious living and dining room with stunning views towards the Serra de Grola.
The kitchen overlooks the courtyard, making it the perfect place for the first coffee in the morning.
A separate toilet near the kitchen and a pantry for coffee and wine at temperature near the living room, allow the hosts to welcome guests for a perfect evening in the Serra. The house is suitable for summer and winter as it is conditioned to be cool in summer and warm in winter.
Facilities: towels and sheets, TV, kitchen, swimming pool, indoor fireplace, clothes hangers, high chair, work space, freezer, dining table, toilet paper and soap, air conditioning, wireless internet, free parking on the premises, terrace, kitchen utensils, coffee maker, kettle, and dishwasher. The house is not suitable for small kids. Smoking and pets are not allowed.
Located in the Serra de Melides, the house is easily accessible via a dirt road suitable for any vehicle.
The town of Melides is a 5 minute drive away and is close to Christian Louboutin’s hotel and cafes where you can enjoy authentic Portuguese coffee with the locals.
The location allows quick and easy access to a variety of beaches to choose between the choppy waves of the Atlantic or the calm waters of the Melides lagoon. Further south are the beaches around Sines, with São Torpes being the surfers’ beach of choice.
Further north are the more mountainous beaches of Carvalhal and Comporta, close to the best beach restaurants.
