Description
On a farm surrounded by olive trees stands the Hacienda de Vale Guardez, a farmhouse built in 1930, located between the Portuguese towns of Estremoz and Monforte, which has been converted from an agricultural farm into an agritourism accommodation where creative retreats and artistic workshops are also held between local artisans and national and international designers.
The property has five bedrooms spread over 380 square metres and sleeps a total of 10 people and is available exclusively in its entirety, with a minimum stay of 4 nights in July, August and New Year’s Eve and two nights in the remaining months of the year.
The farmhouse is surrounded by an extensive garden, with various living and dining areas, which showcases the indigenous Alentejo flora and includes a sunny swimming pool next to the olive grove. The architectural style of the building retains the elements of the typical houses of the region and follows traditional Portuguese techniques, with thick white walls and small windows with two main functions: to protect from the heat of summer and the cold of winter. The black stripe along the lower part of the exterior walls, typical of the Azores, alludes to the family’s origins. The red tiles, the vaulted ceilings and the black stone paving are two key architectural features of the Alto Alentejo region.
The rooms, each different from the other and equipped with a king size bed and shower, reflect an austere décor of whitewashed walls and terracotta or stone floors that conveys the peace and tranquillity of the countryside. The house has two dining areas: an elegant indoor dining room and a porch in the cultivated area of the courtyard with a large dining table. Pieces of art and craftsmanship dot the rooms. The kitchen, with yellow-painted wooden furniture and local marble worktops, is fully equipped with semi-industrial induction hobs and all the utensils for those who love home cooking.
The house has three interconnected rooms: the cosy fireplace room, the reading and TV room and the living room with a large balcony and large arched windows that invite you to reflect while the sun sets over the Alentejo landscape. This farmhouse has a space dedicated to creativity and to holding workshops and retreats: two interconnected rooms and a large adjoining porch designed to host workshops and creative retreats with local artists and artisans and national and international artists. Textiles by Marta Menéres will be on sale in the workshop area, among other items made by artists and artisans from the region. Soon, it will also offer accommodation for artist residencies.
The property bears the imprint in every detail of both its owner, textile artisan Marta Menéres, and her own friend Sam Baron, a French-born designer, who designed the interior and exteriors. ‘The farmhouse concept strikes a delicate balance between the contemporary local/rural and the old, offering an experience where simplicity and comfort go hand in hand,’ they say.
The owner’s taste for art and craftsmanship is clearly visible in the contemporary design elements and artwork scattered throughout the house. The lamps in the fireplace room signed by Sam Baron, together with the illustrations by Mariana Fernandes in the entrance hall, the screens by Carolina Maria and Silvia Lézico in the bedrooms, a painting by Joana Teixeira in the dining room, the mirrors by Catarina Carreiras, the lamp by Gonçalo Campos in one of the bedrooms, the crochet lamps by Marta Menéres in the porch and the ceramic pieces from Estremoz on the chimney flue in the kitchen by Luís Rosa are proof of this.
