Description

The emblazoned Palace House of El Sevil, as recorded in the deeds, dates from the 16th century. It was built to be a convent commissioned by the Caballero del Sevil, a very influential nobleman of the time, who financed part of the Church of Gama. Proof of this is that a Chapel with its Coat of Arms, the same one that emblazons the façade of the house, is preserved here. Adorned by a beautiful Italian garden with centenary fig trees and banana trees dating back to 1750, the property is surrounded by a wall with a turret to preserve its privacy.
The Cantabrian-style manor house has 263 m2 spread over three floors, in addition to the 117 m2 open-plan, double-height annex pavilion on the ground floor. At the entrance to the property there is a hall with a well that connects us to the rest of the rooms: three bedrooms, a bathroom and an ironing area. This property is located in the town of Gama, capital of the municipality of Bárcena de Cicero, situated on the eastern coast of Cantabria, in the region of Trasmiera.

It is bounded to the north by the Ano estuary and to the east by the Treto estuary, where the rivers Asón and Clarín flow into. Between these two estuaries lies part of one of the largest protected wetlands in northern Spain: The Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes. It is an area of passage and refuge for thousands of birds that year after year use this enclave on their migratory journey.

It is crossed by two main roads, the A8 motorway and the N 634, which connect the whole of northern Spain. Santander (40 kms) and Bilbao (60 kms).

It is worth mentioning the collection of historic and religious buildings distributed throughout the municipality (churches, mansions, palaces, military constructions, etc.) that give a glimpse of a past full of history and life.

The house faces the four winds, the entrance hall gives us access to the house, through the south façade, the one that receives the most light and radiation throughout the day and during most of the year.

The emblazoned Palace House of El Sevil, as recorded in the deeds, dates from the 16th century.

It was built for a convent commissioned by the Caballero del Sevil, a very influential nobleman of the time, owner of a large part of the lands in that region, who was in charge of the Crown’s monetary affairs…

Given his influence in the whole region, he ordered the construction and financed part of the Church of Gama, proof of which is that a Chapel with his Coat of Arms is preserved in it, the same one that emblazons the façade of the house.

The Way of St. James passed in front of the house, so a well was built for the pilgrims, always guided by a cypress tree that indicated in the distance that they and their horses could rest there… The well was on the outside and what is now the Pavilion were the stables. Over time the well has been integrated into the interior of the house.

These were wine lands, so there were vineyards, a wine press and a centenary grapevine surrounding the house are preserved.

Among the trees there are centenary fig trees, and the plane trees that frame the entrance date from 1750.

The house is in very good condition. In 1750, one of the most important reforms took place, as can be seen engraved on the façade of the house next to the coat of arms.

Over the years, the house was abandoned until 1995, when a major renovation was carried out on both the house and the Italian-style garden, which has been maintained to this day.

It maintains all the original elements, preserving its unique character.

It needs an update of the distribution adapted to the current needs and those of the future owner. Likewise, the heating installations need to be updated, incorporating a sustainable system.

A safe investment value, it forms part of the historical heritage of Cantabrian architecture. It is currently very popular for weddings, due to its beautiful renaissance garden.

It is perfect for a caterer wishing to manage weddings and events.
