18th century Basque farmhouse in the remote Atxondo Valley

Also avaialble for: Travellers

Description

Basque farmhouse dating back to the 18th century, built in an old hut used to keep livestock and, after its refurbishment in 2008, it has become a home that reflects the family history of its owners. They themselves are the architects of spaces designed in detail and created to enjoy the sensations of a real home in an enclave surrounded by the unspoilt nature of the valley of Atxondo, in Vizcaya. Due to its location and the particularities offered by its situation with respect to the surroundings, this is a house with unbeatable unobstructed views of the valley that allow you to see the entire mountain range, so the sensation is one of total peace. In addition, it is also very fortunate to be in the valley of the Etxebarri Grill – the second best restaurant in the world run by Bittor Arginzoniz – just 4 minutes away by car.

The house was an old borda -a kind of cabin or hut-, originally used to keep cows, inherited and renovated by the owner’s parents. The house has four bedrooms with capacity for eight people and a surface area of 350 square metres.

It is distributed over two floors: the first floor with a toilet, a bedroom with en suite bathroom, two living rooms with open fireplace and a kitchen-dining room, as well as a large washing machine and cleaning area; and the first floor with an open plan living room – which can be used as a reading area – and three bedrooms with en suite bathrooms (two of them equipped with bathtub and shower).

The decoration has been done by the owner’s mother and mixes furniture from the family’s houses that have been emptied out with works of art by family members such as Raúl Urruticoechea, among many others that tell the family story. In addition to the family’s provenance, the furniture comes from the Gastón y Daniela shop and flea markets.
Among the activities that can be carried out in the area around the property, the Basque gastronomy stands out above all, being halfway between Bilbao, San Sebastian and La Rioja.
It has ‘gastroboxes’ and home chefs. You can also go hiking in beautiful natural surroundings such as Besaide -this hiking route starts from the house itself-, the Atxondo Greenway, the Urkiola Natural Park or choose wonderful beaches just 30 minutes away by car.

The best beaches are those of Zarautz, Laga, Mundaka and Bakio. Another option is the cultural offerings of Bilbao, 40 km away, and San Sebastian, 80 km away. It is also advisable to visit the Oma forest and the Chillida Leku. In addition, this manor house offers healing experiences and therapies, yoga retreats, meditation and mindfulness courses and charming weddings.

The minimum stay is two nights. It has heating and rural WiFi. Pets are allowed and it is baby friendly. The airport is 43 km away and the nearest train station in Abadiño is 10 km away. Amillena restaurant offering zero-kilometre products is 5 km away and Asador Etxebarri offers Sunday tapas in the village square (2.7 km). The Balenciaga Museum is 55 km away, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is 60 km away and the town of Durango is 15 km away.
