From 19th century noble house to contemporary retreat in the north of Fuerteventura
Description
Located in La Oliva, a town with a deep-rooted cultural tradition and a historical landmark on the island of Fuerteventura, this building preserves within its immaculate white lime walls the noble style of its origins, when in the 19th and 20th centuries it was a bourgeois house and the headquarters of a casino. This village in the north of Fuerteventura has some 20,000 inhabitants and is home to areas of great scenic value, such as two natural parks, Isla de Lobos and Dunas de Corralejo, and the Tindaya mountain.
This house preserves the traditional elements of Majorcan constructions, where plays, dances and meetings were held to revitalise the social culture of the territory. It has been refurbished and renovated to become a home and accommodation by the Berlin-based Canarian architect Néstor Pérez Batista, who has maintained the simplicity of the 140 square metre floor plan.
The house is laid out in a U-shape around a courtyard, formerly the centre of popular gatherings, which now houses a swimming pool and sunbathing area with hammocks and native vegetation. The dark green doors typical of the island open onto the different rooms. Two living spaces have been created in this Canarian house, a house for the owners’ own use and another volume used as accommodation for friends, family or guests.
The first is called the Antiguo Teatro (Old Theatre) and has a large living room, bedroom with dressing room and rain-effect bathroom in an open space; while the second, La Antigua Vivienda, has a bedroom with bathroom with rain-effect shower, large dressing room, kitchen-dining room in an open-plan space and a living room. One of the toilets is concealed in a cylindrical shape clad in wood that serves as a dividing element between the living area and the rest area. The bathrooms in these houses have been conceived as temples of well-being and have been treated by the architect not as subsidiary spaces but as rooms in their own right.
Inside, the two units of the house conserve the original stone walls and arches, the walls are rendered in lime plaster, the floors are covered with high-strength trowelled concrete and the ceilings have wooden beams painted in white, the colour that dominates all the rooms.
The property can accommodate up to four guests and has two bedrooms with king-size beds, and two en-suite bathrooms equipped with bathtub and shower.
As for the common areas, each of the two volumes has its own living room, dining room and kitchen. They have air conditioning, WiFi, their own staff and a kitchen available for guests’ use.
A sculpture by the multidisciplinary Canarian artist Óscar Latuag presides over the main wall of the swimming pool in the courtyard.
The house functions as a hotel with 2 suites or as a complete villa. The suites can be booked independently and share the swimming pool.
