The region has numerous hiking trails through its forests and mountains, such as the Picos de Europa Natural Park. It is one of the most impressive in Europe, with specimens of brown bear and wolves and spectacular landscapes that will take your breath away. Here you can hike on trails that will take you through impressive canyons and glaciers.

The forest of Hayedo de Ucieda, in the region of Cabuérniga and extends over 50 hectares. This forest is one of the most spectacular in the region and is considered one of the best preserved beech forests in Spain. Here you can find beech trees more than 500 years old, as well as a great variety of plants and animals. The Hacedo de Saja Forest, the most beautiful in Cantabria. It occupies an immense surface, more than a third of Cantabria. It is crowned by fifty mountains of more than 2000 meters high and it is carpeted by the most extensive and best preserved beech forest in the Cantabrian mountain range. Ambushed in this magnificent forest there are bears and wolves, although roe deer and deer are the most abundant in these mountains.

One of the interesting and amusing routes is that of the Natural Park of Cabárceno, located in a unique spot. This park was an old Roman mining exploitation and nowadays, it offers a unique safari experience where you can see wild animals in their natural habitat. In addition, the park has a wide variety of activities for the whole family, including cable car rides and a pool with water slides.

Also not to be missed are the Liencres Dunes Natural Park and the Oyambre Natural Park, famous not only for their scenic beauty, but also for their spectacular unspoiled beaches.

Another place of interest is the medieval village of Santillana del Mar. Walk through its narrow cobbled streets and admire its noble houses.

One of the most beautiful villages in Cantabria is Barcena Mayor, located in the heart of the Pasiegos Valleys. This village is known for its traditional architecture, its green landscapes and its history, which dates back to the 15th century. It is nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains and forests, which makes it an ideal place for nature lovers and hikers. The village is known for its stone and wooden houses. A true architectural jewel of the pre-Romanesque period in Spain is Santa María de Lebeña. This small church is nestled in a stunning natural setting, surrounded by the majestic mountains of the Picos de Europa and bathed by the crystal clear Deva River.

Visit the impressive Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, where the Lignum Crucis, the largest known fragment of the cross of Christ, is preserved. This year is a lebaniego year and you can go to win the jubilee.

The valley of Cabuérniga is characterized by its stunning natural beauty and picturesque villages. Among the most iconic are Sopelana and Mazcuerras, which are must-see places. La Ostrería, in San Vicente de la Barquera. Its business concept is for everyone, based on local produce and, above all, on the possibilities provided by the Cantabrian Sea.

El Remedio, in Ruiloba. It represents a tribute to the product and the land, without renouncing to the conquest of new clear and strong flavors full of nuances.

El Pájaro amarillo on the beach of Oyambre. It takes the name of the Yellow Bird as a tribute to the plane that on June 14, 1919 at 20:40 h. made a crash landing on the sand of the beach of Oyambre. The original idea was to emulate the Spirit of St. Louis, the pioneer plane to cross the Atlantic in 1927 and land with full honors in Paris, but the story was very different. They arrived at Oyambre without a drop of gasoline and a stowaway on board.

Gastronomy

Cantabria is famous for its delicious cuisine and its great variety of traditional dishes. If you are a lover of good food, then you must try the famous squid rabas, which are served as an appetizer in many bars and restaurants in the region. You should also try traditional dishes such as cocido montañés, a stew made with white beans, pork and vegetables. Don’t leave without trying the anchovies from Santoña (bocartes), its famous baked cheesecake and quesada, of great tradition throughout Cantabria, and the sobaos pasiegos, especially the sobaos El Macho; their artisanal elaboration, texture and aroma make them unique and a delight to the palate.

Cantabrian fish is famous for its flavor and freshness; it is a delight for lovers of the flavors of the sea. If there is one fish that stands out above all others, it is the San Martín. This species is highly appreciated by local fishermen and is known for its tender and tasty meat. It can be cooked in many ways, although the most traditional way is grilled, with a little oil and salt.

The Anchoteca de Santoña is the place of reference for tasting anchovies. They are the best in the area. You can also buy there the options that you like. Doña Emilia also has a grill also famous for sardines and other snacks. Highly recommended.

Casa Navarro in Pámanes, offers a wide selection of tapas and homemade rations simple and very appetizing, prepared with the best recipes of traditional cuisine.

El Bosque in Entrambasaguas, is known for its potato dishes. During weekend dinners it is usually full, so make a reservation if you don’t want to be left without a table.

El Baruco in Anero. With very high level food, gastrobar oriented, classic but making a difference.

La Modernista, in Hoz de Anero. and its specialty is empanadas. You can enjoy delicious dishes and taste their homemade fruit pie, their amazing fried milk and their well prepared cheesecake.

Asador El Tronky is considered one of the best grilled meat and fish grills in the town of Pedreña, popular in the south of the bay of Santander. Next to the Somo’s strut.

Casa Tomás is a classic that never fails. Noted for its traditional food, it has one of the best “cocido montañés”, the typical stew here.

Santander

In Santander we can find various options such as the famous restaurant El Bar del Puerto, a classic with the best raw material.

La Caseta de Bombas is a gastro-cultural project designed to recover spaces and give voice to small artisan producers. It is a historic building located next to the Gamazo dock and converted into a grill of organic meats from Cantabria and fish from the Santander fish market.

El Machi is the oldest seafood tavern in Santander. Ask for their Cantabrian squid rabas and enjoy them on the terrace.

La Bombi is not just another restaurant, it is one of the most emblematic places in Santander. Perhaps one of the places where you can enjoy the rich gastronomy of Cantabria as it is.

La Posada del Mar, began as a sailor tavern and over time, became one of the best restaurants in the city of Santander.

In the most lively area of Santander, we find La Tasca Bonifaz, a place with a taste of tasca mountain, of those of always.

El Cañadío, Días de Sur, La Cigaleña, Cormorán and more traditional options such as Bodega El Riojano are equally appetizing.

In the Pasiegos Valleys we can find Casa El Macho, where you can see where the famous “El Macho” sobaos were born, or the Joselín Sobao Pasiego Museum, where they transfer their passion for what they do to all areas.
